Canine cardiomyopathy? Does your dog suffer from this and how old is he/she?

My dog is called Lily. She is a 2 year old Bedlington terrier and two months ago she was diagnosed with dilated cardio myopathy. She developed aschites (stomach fluid retention) and looked like she%26#039;d swallowed a football. Due to her being a Bedlington terrier, prone to copper storage disease, the vet said she probably has liver disease aswell, but I won%26#039;t allow a biopsy due to her heart problem and the dangers with general anesthetic.

She%26#039;s been prescribed Enalapril and Frusemide and eats Hills Science Plan L/D. But she vomits on average once a week, her stools are loose and she turns her nose up at her food most days. Is there a better food she should be on?

She does still love her walks though, and somtimes I forget she is dying when she is happy playing.

But she looks anorexic I worry she%26#039;ll fade away. But I don%26#039;t know whether to prepare myself for that now or in a few months or years?

Please tell me the stories of your dogs and what happened or is happening to them and you..

Canine cardiomyopathy? Does your dog suffer from this and how old is he/she?
I have a rescue dog, about age 13 with cardiomyopathy due to mvd.He is on lasix, enalapril and vetmedin.I feed wellness super 5 senior which is low sodium but a better food than hills.I have also heard wysong now has prescription diets but have not researched it yet.Even rice with boiled chicken may tempt her and is blandHas your dog had an ultrasound of the heart?Yahoo has a group called canine chf which is good for info.good luck
Reply:I have never had a dog with cardio. But you should talk to your vet and find out what it is about the crappy S/D that he is recommending it for. Go to the petfood store and tell the woman what you are looking for.. Is it a low salt diet? Low fat diet or what? find out from the vet and then you can research foods from there.
Reply:I had an Old English sheepdog that had Cardiomyopathy. He was diagnosed at about 6 yrs old and lived to be 12. He also was on enalapril and one other drug which I have forgotten the name of. He did fine on the meds and was playful until the last couple of weeks. Good luck with your dog!
