Cat 1 + Cat 2 = sad house?

Last year I lost one of my cats. 2 months ago a friend needed a home for sensational elderly fellow (Hastings 14 years) with a peaceful demeanor and good house habits. I agreed to take him.

Unfortunately. He doesn%26#039;t really jive with our household. Mainly with the other cat Lily (8 years). In fact this lively but laidback fellow has taken to stalking her and attacking. It is getting to the point where they are fighting under closed doors... I am saddened but I am kinda out of ideas so here is what I have tried...and I am looking for a few new ideas.

The cats have:

seperate litter, sleeping and eating places

seperate toys and shared toys

each have their own kitty condo tower

I have been keeping them seperated when they are not supervised because Lily is declawed and cannot protect herself.

I live in a 1000sqft two level house with a yard (hastings goes out when I am gardening or whatever - Lily doesn%26#039;t) According to the lit - that should be big enough.

Ideas?

Cat 1 + Cat 2 = sad house?
Sounds like Hastings has become a%26quot;good ole boy%26quot; and intends to rule. You certainly have done all the right things. Cats defend themselves with their back claws if that makes you feel better and of course biting is included. If Hastings has been with an elderly lady than you can bet he was treated like a King! You don%26#039;t really say how long you%26#039;ve had Hastings but if it%26#039;s been a good time than maybe it%26#039;s time to find Hastings another elderly owner that will worship him. Lily deserves some peace. A kitten would adapt much better to the household an Lily%26gt; I wish you , Hastings @ Lilly well!
Reply:Try getting a Feliway pheramone diffuser. You can find it at some vet offices. It%26#039;s supposed to help calm cats. It%26#039;s a little pricy at like $70, but is worth a try. (It%26#039;s like a scented plug-in, but humans can%26#039;t smell it.) Also try buying Rescue Remedy found in the organic section of grocery store or health food store. Put it between their ears a few times a day to help calm them too. Keeping them separate for now is a good idea. You can try switching rooms between them so they get used to each other%26#039;s smell.
Reply:Ah yes, the common problem of cat politics. No one knows what makes one cat get along with one cat but not another. It just happens. I had that problem too with two of my female cats. They got into some serious fights and had to be supervised most of the time. They could not be left alone together. Sadly one of them passed away two weeks ago. The other cat is still afraid to walk freely around the house. I never figured out how to get them to get along. Besides the steps you%26#039;ve already taken I%26#039;m not sure what else you can do. If the cats aren%26#039;t fixed I%26#039;d say to try that. If he%26#039;s playful maybe he%26#039;s not expending enough energy and he%26#039;s taking all the extra energy out on stalking your other kitty. Set some time aside to play with him each day and make sure he has toys to occupy himself with. I know that%26#039;s mainly a theory for dog behavior but who knows, it might work for cats too. Good luck and I hope it works out. Kudos to you for taking in an older kitty that needed a home. :)
Reply:The two just don%26#039;t jive and I think you are doing the best you can. Do you know anyone who can take Hastings as a single cat?
Reply:Given the way cats are, you are doing a fabulous job and doing exactly what you should do. Hastings is probably too old to do much changing of his ways and that he%26#039;s getting on at all speaks for your good care. He may get bored with his program after a while and things will settle, but I think you are doing the best for them both and should get a reward for your efforts.
Reply:I have 4 cats one lives out side because it used to be a feral kitten. i had her spayed after her second litter and shes in love with my orange cat but hate the other two which are her kids. shes always hissing at them and tries to take a whack at them and i have no idea why. I%26#039;m not sure there%26#039;s much you can do so they will get along.
Reply:Well The Cats Dont Like Each Other They Have Split Personalities And One Cat Probably Misses The Other Dead Cat So Its Probably In Denial Of Other Cats
