Toddler with Down Syndrome very stubborn and behind now, so will she do well later in life? Any experience?

Hello!

My 3 year old daughter Lily has down syndrome. She is brilliant. She knows anything from figuring out any toy or puzzle to changing the batteries in her electrical toys! (though we don%26#039;t let her) but she knows how!

She can figure anything out.

She is also a delight. The sweetest little girl around. Smiling and laughing and happy all the time!

BUT she does not speak yet and hardly signs any words. She also is very close but still is not walking on her own. She only takes a few steps here and there.

What I%26#039;d like to know is if you have been in a similar situation. Did you have a toddler with d.s. who was stubborn to learn new things and was slow learning many basic things but is now older and knows how to walk and talk, etc?

Is this a phase? Is there hope for me? I%26#039;m becoming very upset and worried.

Thank you.

Our daughter is six. She%26#039;s also very smart and doing great now. You%26#039;re right at the age when you worry the most about your child with DS, because she%26#039;s at that transition time when you start to see lots of changes, or expect them. It%26#039;s hard to wait longer than with other kids, but that%26#039;s what you have to do. Lily needs a couple more years to reach the point where she%26#039;s doing all those toddler things you see other kids doing by now. Do all her therapies as much as you can and don%26#039;t give up on her, or she%26#039;ll never get it. And make sure there isn%26#039;t some simple problem that%26#039;s holding her back, like hearing problems. Many kids with DS have ear fluid or other problems that cause hearing, and therefore speech, issues, and they often go undetected or not treated aggressively enough.
Reply:i have got a nephew that has down syndrome and he is doing good now they go through phases but in the end they do very good though just give her your love and attention the best you can and just be there for her
